Properties of materials Flashcards
Strength
The materials ability to withstand an applied stress without failure
Toughness
Ability with withstand impact without fracture
Ductility
Capable of having its shape changed permanently by means of applied force
Malleability
The property of something that can be worked or hammered or shaped without breaking
Durability
Capable of withstanding wear and tear and decay
Thermal conductivity
Rate at which heat will flow through a material
Electrical conductivity
Measure of a materials ability to conduct an electric current
Hardness
A measure of the resistance of a material to surface indentation or abrasion
Brittleness
It is liable to fractures when subjected to stress. That is, has a little tendency to deform before fracture
Tensile strength
The maximum stress that a material can withstand without breaking
Plasticity
The property of being physically malleable, the property of something that can be worked or hammered or shaped without breaking
Compressive strength
The property of a material that relates to its ability to resist compression loads
Sheer strength
The maximum stress that a material will bear when it is twisted or otherwise deformed without stretching or compression
Strength of weight ratio
The specific strength is a materials strength divided by its density
Chemical resistance
The ability of a coating to resist damage by chemicals
