Properties of Materials Flashcards
What is the difference between a compound and a mixture?
Compounds are substances formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements. Mixtures are substances formed by physically mixing two or more substances together.
How does dissolving happen. Use particle theory to explain.
When the attraction between the particles of the solvent and solute are strong enough to overcome the attraction of the particles of the solute from one another.
What is a saturated solution?
A solution that contains the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved under the condition at which the solution exists.
What is the solute?
A substance that is dissolved in a solvent
What is a solvent?
A solvent is any substance, usually liquid, which is capable of dissolving one or several substances
How does temperature affect the rate of dissolving?
Temperature affects dissolving because the higher the temperature the quicker the particles move and intermingle, which makes the dissolving process quicker.
A substance that will not dissolve in water is ____________
Insoluble
Solutions A and B have the same volume of solvent, but solution A has more solute particles in it than solution B.
Solution A is more ____________ than solution B
Concentrated
What is a saturated solution
When no more solute will dissolve in the solvent.
Sugar dissolves in water, so it is ______________
Soluble
Why do you draw the line in pencil for paper chromatography?
Because it is insoluble.
Which three factors effect the rate of dissolving?
Temperature
Stirring
Surface area
(or volume of water)
What temperature would sugar dissolve faster in. 10° or 50°.
50°
What is a filtrate?
A solution that has passed through a filter.
What is a mixture?
A substance made by mixing other substances together.
What is the difference between dissolving and melting?
Dissolving is the complete mixing of particles of a solid in a liquid to form a solution. Melting is the state of when a solid turns to a liquid.
What is the difference between a solute, a solvent, and a solution.
Solute- The solid that is dissolved.
Solvent- A liquid in which other substances will dissolve.
Solution- A mixture formed when a solid dissolves in a liquid.
(SOLUTE dissolves in the SOLVENT to create a SOLUTION.)
When 20g of salt is added to 100g of water what is the mass now?
120g (20g +100g = 120g
What is the difference between transparent and opaque.
Opaque is not able to be seen through but transparent is see through.
If you add 50g of water into a solution of sodium chloride. You have ________________ the solution.
Diluted
