Properties of materials Flashcards
strength =
ability to withstand forces without breaking. (rope resists pulling forces)
Hardness =
ability to withstand scratching/abrasion/denting (tools)
toughness =
ability to withstand breaking/snapping (bend instead > armour/bulletproof vest)
elasticity =
ability to stretch/bend and return to original shape (spring)
malleability =
able to be bent and shaped(most metals -hammered)
ductility =
ability to be drawn into a wire
electrical conductivity =
how well electricity passes through (conductors-wires-= let pass, insulators-wire coating-= don’t)
thermal conductivity =
how well heat passes through something (conductor= pan, insulator=handle)
Fusibility =
how well something can be melted and fused together(solder = ^fusibility as it melts before metals being fused together)
density =
how much mass something has (solid wood table has a lot of mass =more dense)
absorbency =
how well a material can soak up moisture (natural fibres are absorbent- synthetic aren’t)
