Properties of Biological Molecules Flashcards
Non-covalent bond
Electrostatic - Positive attracting negative
Hydrogen Bonds - Basically same only with hydrogen
Van Der Waals - Electronic charge around atom fluctuates creating areas capable of bonding
Cuolomb’s Law
E = kq1q2 / Dr
Free energy change (Delta G)
Delta G = -RTlnK
Delta G = Delta G (rxn) + RTlnK
(Normal Delta G comes from Table of rxn’s using 1M of both reactants
Mass Action (Le chatliers principle)
Drive a reaction by increasing the concentration of the reactants or decreasing the concentration of the product.
Oxidation-Reduction Reactions (ReDox)
Electron donor (i.e. reducing agent) will reduce (or be oxidized by) the electron receptor (i.e. oxidizing agent).
Acid-Base Reactions
Weak acid dissociates in water, releasing proton and weak conjugate base
Weak base combines with protons in water, forming its conjugate acid
pH = ????
-log [H+]
[H+] = molarity of solution
Henderson-Hasselbalch Eq
pH = pKa + log([A-]/[HA]) pH = pKa + log (base/acid)
Covalent Bond
Typical C-C Bond
1.54 A, 85 kcal/mol
if pH > pKa then???
The substance will be deprotonated, meaning it will be basic
