Properties of Alkenes (13.1) Flashcards
What kind of molecule is an alkene?
Hydrocarbon
An alkene has at one carbon = carbon double bond. What kind of hydrocarbon are they?
Unsaturated Hydrocarbons
What is the general formula for aliphatic alkenes with C=C bond?
Cn+2n
How many electrons does carbon have in it’s highest energy level?
Four
How are pi covalent bonds formed?
The sideways overlap of two p-orbitals from each carbon atom in the double bond.
Why do pi bonds prevent the rotation of carbon atoms in an alkene?
The pi-electron density is concentrated above and below the line joining their nucleuses together.
((the pi bond is above and below the atoms.))
What is the shape around the C=C double bond?
Trigonal Planar
What are the differences between a sigma bond and a pi bond?
-Pi bonds occur in double bonds while Sigma bonds occur in single covalent bonds
-Pi bonds restrict rotation while Sigma bonds do not
- Sigma bonds only occur in the middle of the C-C bonds while Pi bonds are horizontally above and below the C=C atoms
-Pi bonds are stronger
What would alkene’s with one double bond suffix be?
-ene
What would an alkene with three double bond’s suffix be?
-triene
