Properties of Aerospace Materials Flashcards
1
Q
What properties are used to select materials for airframes
A
- Young’s modulus
- yield/failure strength
- specific Young’s modulus (property/density)
- service temperature
2
Q
Why can’t Al be used for airframes in military aircraft
A
Al melting point is 130deg.
This temperature can be generated by friction at around Mach 2.2/2.3
Military aircraft go faster than this
3
Q
What properties are used to select materials for aircraft interiors
A
- fire resistant - most importantly no smoke
- cost
- aesthetics
- weight
4
Q
What kind of material needs to be used for the Radome
A
- radome = nose of plane
- material that lets radiowaves through i.e. not metal
- glass fibre / ceramics
5
Q
What properties are used to select materials for space travel
A
- extreme temperature
- radiation protection
- impact protection
- weight
