Properties and States of Matter Flashcards
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space
Volume
the amount of space taken up or occupied, by an object
Meniscus
The curve at a liquids surface by which one measures the volume of the liquid
Mass
the measure of the amount of matter in a object
weight
the measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object
physical property
a characteristic of substance that does not involve a chemical change (Ex. of physical property: density, color, and hardness)
density
the amount of matter in a givin space or volume
physical change
a change that affects one or more physical properties of a substance
chemical properties
a property of matter that describes a substance’s ability to participate in a chemical reaction
chemical change
a change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties
thermal conductivity
the rate at which a substance transfers heat
ductility
the ability of a substance to be pulled into a wire
malleability
the ability of a substance to be rolled or pounded into thin sheets
states of matter
physical forms in which a substance can exist
solid
the state of matter in which the volume and shape of a substance are fixed (ex: a soccer ball)
