Properties And States Of Matter Flashcards
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space
Atom
Smallest unit of an element that still maintains its properties; building blocks of matter
Pure substance
Made up of only one type of particle
Element
A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances
Compound
A pure substance made of two or more elements CHEMICALLY combined
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined
Solution
A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances
A solution in which the substance is the solvent
Suspension
A mixture in which particles can be seen and easily separated by separation of filtration
Colloid
A mixture containing small, undissolved particles that do not settle out
Physical Properties
something that is observed without changing the identity of the substance
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter in an object
Volume
The amount of space matter takes up
Density
Amount of mass in a certain volume
Chemical Property
Something that can be seen or tested while changing into a different substance
Law of Conservation of Mass
The law that says that mass cannot be created or destroyed in any changes; chemical or physical.
Physical Change
A change of matter from one form to another without changing it chemically
Chemical Change
A change that happens when at least one substance changes into an entirely new substance with completely different properties.
Solid
The state of Matter in which an objects shape and volume are stable.
Liquid
The state of Matter in which an objects particles are free to flow
Gas
The state of Matter. In which an object has no definite shape or volume.
Pressure
The amount of force applied over a unit area
Plasma
The state of Matter that starts as a gas and then becomes ionized
