Properties and models of bonding Flashcards
Having trouble remembering what kind of chemical bond a certain compound has? Or how does this type of bonding affect bond strength and bond length? Use these cards to master these topics in type chemical bonding, bond length, and bond strength.
What kind of chemical bond forms between sodium and chlorine?
Ionic bond
Ionic bonding is a chemical bond between a metal (sodium) and a nonmetal (chlorine).
Determine the kind of chemical bond formed in CCl4.
Covalent bond
Covalent bonding is a chemical bond between two nonmetals.
What is the name of the compound KCl?
Potassium chloride
K is potassium and Cl is chlorine, so the name is potassium chloride.
Determine the name of the compound with a chemical formula of S2O.
Disulfur monoxide
Sulfur is S, there are two S, hence there is a prefix of di-.
Oxygen is O, there is only one O, hence there is a prefix of mono- (sometimes, “mono” prefix is ommitted).
Is S2O a polar or a nonpolar compound?
Polar compound
The electronegativity difference between S and O of 1.0, it also has a bent shape, so the charge distribution being unequal making it polar.
