Properties Flashcards
What are properties
The characteristic of a material under different conditions and forces.
Mechanical properties
How a material responses to applied force or loads
Tension
Pulling apart
Compression
Squeezing together
Torsion
Twisting
Shear
Forces going against each other
Toughness
The ability for a material to withstand impact and not break
Conductivity
A material that allows heat and electricity to pass through or transfer easily
Good conductivity material:
Metal
Classification of metals: ferrous
•contains iron
•strong-usually magnetic
•rusts easily
•example: cast iron,steel
Non ferrous
•does not contain iron
•does not rust
•low melting point
•example: copper aluminium.
Alloys
An alloy contains a combination of 2 metals. Example: brass (mix of copper and zinc)
Ductility
The ability to plastically deform deform under pulling force
This allows a material to be drawn into wire
Example copper
Malleability
A malleable material will flatten easily under comprehensive force
Example: gold silver
Hardness
The ability of a material to withstand indentation and scratching on its surface and will not ware down easily,
Example tungsten
