properties Flashcards
compressive strength
Ability to withstand being crushed or shortened by pushing forces (e.g., - Bridge - concrete, steel- stool legs)
tensile strength
Ability to resist stretching or pulling forces (tension) (e.g.,- rope, fabrics, cable - suspension bridge - low carbon steel)
shear strength
The ability to resist sliding forces on a parallel plane (scissors)
bending strength
The ability to resist sliding forces on that may bend the material (e.g.,- support beams - cast iron/steel)
torsional strength
Ability to withstand twisting forces from applied torque or torsion (timber beam - oak, metal)
hardness
Ability to resist abrasive wear such as scratching, surface indentation or cutting (stainless steel)
toughness
Ability to absorb impact force without fracture (e.g., - kevlar, phone cases)
plasticity
Ability to permanently deformed (shaped) and retain the deformed shape (concrete, building support, plastic wrap)
ductility
Ability to be drawn out under tension, reducing the cross-sectional area without cracking (i.e., - stretching material into a wire: gold, silver, copper etc.)
malleability
Withstanding deformation by compression without cracking (increases with a raise in temp.) (e.g., - aluminium, tin foil)
elasticity
Ability to be deformed and then return to original shape (when the force is removed) (i.e., - rubber)
