What are the drug interactions for Inderal?

A
  • May decrease effects of theophylline or clonidine.
  • Barbiturates or rifampin may decrease effects.
  • Cimetidine may increase serum levels.
  • Hydralazine, propafenone, thioamines, or phenothiazines may increase effects.
  • NSAIDs may decrease effects.
  • Toxic effects may be increased with verapamil.
  • Severe hypertension occurs with epinephrine.
  • May increase toxic affects of ergot alkaloids or lidocaine. - Use with prazosin may increase postural hypotension

What are the contraindications of propranolol hydrochloride?

A
  • Use is contraindicated in patients with cardiogenic shock, bronchial asthma, sinus bradycardia, greater than first-degree heart block, and congestive heart failure, unless secondary to tachyarrhythmia treatable with propanolol.
  • Use with caution in pregnant or nursing mothers, in patients with impaired renal or hepatic function, bronchospasmic diseases, diabetes mellitus, and thyrotoxicosis.
  • Pregnancy Category C

What are the adverse effects of Inderal?

A

Dizziness, fatigue, lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting, bronchospasm, bradycardia, and peripheral vascular insufficiency.

What should the RPh tell the patient when counseling on propanolol hydrochloride?

A
  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If it is closer to the time of your next dose than the dose you missed, skip the missed dose and return to your dosing schedule. Do not double dose.
  • May cause drowsiness. Use caution while operating machinery or when mental alertness is required.
  • Patients with diabetes need to be aware that this agent can cause masking of hypoglycemic symptoms
  • Avoid OTC cough, cold, and allergy medications unless otherwise directed
