What is propaganda?
Information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or hurt a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc.
Simplifies an argument to only two choices and gives one a “dangerous” outcome
Either/Or Choices
Exaggerates possible dangers well beyond statistical likelihood, which causes consumers to panic and act irrationally
Scare Tactics/Fear
Arguments that use tender emotions excessively to grab readers’ attention and distract readers from fact
Sentimental Appeals
Portrays today’s tiny misstep as tomorrow’s slide into disaster
Slippery Slope
The act of relating something or someone we respect with a product
Transfer
Can be heart wrenching or heart warming
Sentimental Appeals
Urges people to follow the same path that everyone else is taking
Bandwagon
Attacks directed at the character of a person rather than at the claims he or she makes
Ad Hominem Arguments
A celebrity endorsement of a philosophy, movement, or candidate
Testimonial
Closely related to transfer; a generally accepted virtue is usually employed to stir up favorable emotions
