Proof of Church Flashcards
Alma
Thought to be a woman’s name until 1960’s cave of letters discovery near the dead sea “Alma, son of Judah”
What is the best proof of the book of Mormon?
- the inability of the critics of the book of mormon to explain it
- I don’t have the faith to believe Joseph Smith wasn’t a prophet because of the book of Mormon.
Hallucinations
Joseph would have somehow gotten all 11 witnesses to hallucinate.
Lie
All proof points to a very honest and sincere individual who loved those around him. Same with the 11 witnesses.
3 Whitnesses
2 Left the church. One never came back and even had his testimony of the BOM on his gravestone. Known as honest and good people by all
Blacksmith
No evidence Joseph was a blacksmith. Didn’t have enough money to make plates of metal of any kind.
Other Witnesses
Mary Whitmar,
Emma’s Testimony
She said Joseph couldn’t have written or dictated a well-worded letter let alone a literary masterpiece
Lehi’s trip
They’ve now found a town in Saudia Arabia called Nahom and a bountiful on the coast due east of NHM
Success of BOM
- About 200 million copies published. One of the most successful books in history (#6).
- Joseph went from fool to genius
- ## Now called the most successful piece of American literature or one of the top
Complexity of BOM
- 200 named characters
- 150 locations
- 3 calendar systems
- a system of weights and measures (similar to Hebrew and Egyptian)
- (Hebrewisms) thousands of Hebrew literary elements (chiasms)
- Complex geography
- Complex genealogy
- Comparable to Lord of the Rings, which took an Oxford professor decades to create
- Joseph did it in 74 days with no mistakes/revisions/notes/starting and stopping in perfect spot
- ## fits style of many ancient Hebrew writers much better than uneducated farmboy of American frontier
Plates
- Thought not exist and then now found over and over very similar to the plates Joseph claimed to find
Isa. 35:1-2
The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose…”
Isa. 2: 2
the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and all nations shall flow unto it.
