Prokaryotic vs eukaryotic cells Flashcards

1
Q

Compare prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

A
Prokaryotic:
Most diverse.
Small, 0.2 μm - 2.0 μm in diameter.
Simple.
No nucleus, cytoskeleton or membrane bound organelles.
Eukaryotic:
Large and complex.
True membrane bound nucleus.
Membrane bound organelles.
Large and complex ribosomes.
Cytoskeleton for structure and mobility.
Large genome.

Q

How do the structure of lysosomes help it to function?

A

Contain acid hydrolyses/enzymes (hydrolytic enzymes) that work at a low ph.
Using proton pump and chloride channel.
H+ and Cl- enter lysosome lumen, creating HCL.
