Prokaryotic cells and viruses Flashcards
How small is a prokaryotic cell?
1um - 10um
What is the structure and role of the cell wall in a prokaryote?
- Made of murein
- a physical barrier that excludes certain substances and protects against mechanical damage.
What is the role of the mucilaginous slime capsule?
Helps prokaryotes cling to each other and prevents drying out.
What is the role of cell surface membrane?
Acts as a differentially permeable layer which controls the entry and exit of chemicals.
What does the cell-surface membrane contain?
70S ribosomes.
What is the role of circular DNA?
contains the genetic information for the replication of bacterial cells.
What is the role of the plasmids?
Possess genes that may aid the survival of bacteria in adverse conditions
Compare eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells?
DNA: P- freely in the cytoplasm, continue extra dna plasmids and not bound to proteins. E- in the nucleus and bound to histone proteins, no plasmids.
Cell wall: p- made of murein. e- cellulose or chitin.
Organelles: p-no membrane bound organelles. e- some membrane bound cells eg mitochondria.
Ribosomes: p- 70s. e- 80s
What is a virus?
An Acellular, non living particle.
What are the components of viruses?
Proteins molecules, capsid, RNA genetic material, matrix.
