Prokaryotic cells Flashcards
Light microscope cons
-limited light resolution by the wavelength of visible light (400-700nm)
-limited to 1000x
-nothing gained by increasing magnification
Electron microscope pros
-much higher resolution (shortest distance between 2 points that can be distinguished)
-shorter wavelength (2-12pm) therefore higher resolution
-0.00001mm, 0.001 um, 1nm
-ultrasturcture of cells can be seen
- can see viruses and bacteria
Compartmentalization
Prokaryotic cells have a simple cell structure without compartmentalization
Nucleoid
region containing a single, free, DNA strand
Ribosome
Site of protein synthesis
Flagella
enlongated, unflezible, corckscrew shape, resembles pili, made to move cell
Binary fission
Prokrayotes form of division (asexual)
Binary fission steps
1) DNA is replicated semi conservatevley
2) The 2 DNA loops attach to the membrane
3) The membrane enlongates and pinches of (cytokinesis) forming 2 separate cells
4) The 2 daughter cells are genetically identical (clones)
Prokaryotic DNA
- circular DNA molecule
- naked-not associated with proteins
- plasmid often present
- one chromosome only
