Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells Flashcards
Describe a Prokaryotic Cell
single-celled, lacks a nucleus, has no membrane bound organelles, smaller than eukaryotic cells.
Describe a Eukaryotic Cell
contains a nucleus, membrane bound organelles, surrounded by a plasma membrane, plants and animals contain these.
Mitochondria
the membrane bound organelle that produces energy to the cell and carries out cellular respiration. It produces most of the ATP in the body.
Which membrane bound organelle contains digestive enzymes capable of breaking down proteins, nucleic acids, carbs and lipids?
lysosomes
What does chloroplast do?
Helps plants carry out photosynthesis
What is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum responsible for?
synthesis and transport of lipids and steroids
What is the rough endoplasmic reticulum responsible for?
has ribosomes that assist in protein synthesis.
What is a monomer?
Small organic molecule from which larger molecules are made. Examples include amino acids, nucleotides, and sugars.
What is a polymer?
Larger macromolecules made up of monomers.
What happens in the protoplasm?
All the chemical reactions necessary for the cell to survive.
