Prokaryotes Flashcards
What is the structure of RNA polymerase
6 subunits.
one of which is a special unit called sigma factor that has multiple forms
What is an operon?
A region with multiple adjacent genes that code for proteins that work together in a metabolic pathway.
What is special about prokaryotic RNA
It is polycistronic: meaning it is the transcript of multiple genes at once.
What does the promoter have?
An RNAp binding site
What dictates the rate of transcription
Other binding proteins and RNAp affinity for the promoter.
What is the repressor site and where is it located?
It is the operator and it is located after the promoter.
What is special about the genes that make an opeton?
they all have a start site and a termination site.
What is the direction of translation? (Hint: transcription and translation are simultaneous in proka)
5’ to 3’
How can you find the RNAp active site
where the RNA has a 3’ end
How long is the DNA RNA hybrid helix.
8 bp
