Projection Flashcards
What is projection?
A map projection represents the surface of Earth or a celestial space on a plane surface.
True or False
Every type of projection distorts some aspects of Earth’s true land
True
What is the Mercator projection?
It was named after Gerardus Mercator. It was once useful in the 1800’s for navigating the Americas. The straight lines and right angles of the map served as a compass.
What is bad about the Mercator Map?
The bad thing about the Mercator Map was that it elongated the continents/countries near the North and South poles.
What is the Goode Homolosine?
It was the first EQUAL map. It was created by John Paul and it avoids shape distortion but creates in between the oceans.
What could you compare Goode Homolosine to?
Like flattening out an orange peel.
What is the Polar Projection?
It was a map taken from the birds-eye view. This could be viewed from the North or South Pole. Continents that are much closer to the poles seem bigger.
What is the Peter’s Projection?
The Peter’s Projection was like the Mercator but instead of elongating the poles, the countries/continents elongated around the equator.
What is the Robinson Projection?
The Robinson Projection is the most appealing projection. It shows the least amount of disproportion. The lines are curved and they only form a 90° angle at the equator.
Define latitude
The horizontal lines circling Earth; parallel to the equator. It is the degree of distance north or south of the equator which is at 0°.
Define longitude
Vertical lines on Earth’s surface that marks an imaginary circle connecting the North and South poles.
