Projectiles Flashcards
What is a projectile?
Object launched and moves under the influence of gravity
Object launched from rest?
only gravity acting on it and no horizontal motion
Object launched vertically upwards?
gravity acting against object and no horizontal motion
For vertical motion, at the apex?
final vertical velocity = 0
If object returns to original height in vertical motion?
Motion is identical and time is the same
Object launched horizontally?
Constant horizontal velocity as no horizontal forces acting on it (a=0)
Constant vertical acceleration (-9.8ms-2)
Horizontal distance travelled by a projectile is called?
range
time taken for projectile to travel horizontally equals?
the time taken for it to travel vertically
What does horizontally affect and not affect?
It affects time taken for object to fall vertically but affect the range of an object
Objects launched at an angle?
At max height Vv=0
TIme taken to reach max height is half total time
What is a satelite?
Projectile that follows a circular orbit due to its constant horizontal velocity and constant vertical acceleration
Newton’s thought experiment
If a projectile is launched with sufficient to match the curvature of the earth meaning it never hits the ground. it is in a constant state of free fall
