Projectile Motion Flashcards
1
Q
What is a projectile?
A
An object which is moving with a curved path under the influence of gravity.
2
Q
Why do projectiles follow a curved path?
A
They inly accelerate in one direction - they have a constant horizontal velocity, but accelerate downwards vertically (weight is acting on it)
3
Q
Why may satellites stay in orbit!?
A
They move like projectiles with a curved path.
They have a constant horizontal velocity but accelerate towards the Earth because of their weight
4
Q
When is the period of a satellite greater?
A
When in a high altitude
5
Q
Geostationary satellites
A
Height - 36,000km
Period - 24 hours
Earth period -24 hours
Stay above the same point on the Earth’s surface as they orbit
