Types of Specifications
-prescriptive specifications (closed)

Types of Prescriptive (Closed) Specifications
-proprietary specifications are the most restrictive in that they require use of a specific manufacturer’s products
—do not allow for competitive bidding; may be difficult or expensive to acquire; may need long lead times
-base bid with alternates: a type of specification that calls out a proprietary product but allows the substitution of other products that the contractor determines to be equal to the one stated
Types of Performance (Open) Specifications
-descriptive specification: gives detailed written descriptions of the material or product and the workmanship required for its fabrication and installation
-reference standard specification: describes a material, product, or process based on the performance of that material or assembly in comparison to reference standards set by an accepted authority or test method
—short and easy to write, chances for errors are reduced
