Project Management Flashcards
Name some project management issues
- How should the project be organised?
- Who should be part of it?
- How do we schedule the work?
- Role distribution
What is a Role?
A role defines a set of duties and tasks(responsibilities) a person has to do.
Name the 3 types of organisation forms and shortly name advantages and disadvantages of each.
- Functional organisation
+ useful for projects with a lot of linearity and Lew communication needs - high chance of overlapping work among departments
- Project-based organisation
+ responsive to new requirements
+ new people can be hired
+ there’s no idle time for the project members - team cannot be assembled rapidly nad hiring can be difficult
- Matrix organisation
+ teams for projects can be quickly assembled
+ expertise can be applied to different projects if needed - team members often not familiar with each other, have different working styles
- multiple projects can be difficult for team members
- DOUBLE BOSS problem, team member must respond to two different bosses with different focuses
Functional organisation: How are the people grouped? What are its properties?
people are grouped into departments, each having a function (Sales, PR, etc)
- Projects are pipelined through departments
- different departments often address identical needs
Project-based organisation: How are the people grouped? What are its properties?
people are assigned to several projects, with a given deadline for each
- teams are assembled when project is created
- Each project has a project manager
- A participant is involved only in a single project
- teams are disassembled when project ends
Matrix organisation: How are the people grouped? What are its properties?
People from different functional groups are assigned to work on one or more projects.
Name the advantages and disadvantages of information flow through non hierarchical project organisations
+ cutting down on bureaucracy (direct communication is possible)
+ Reduces development time
+ Decisions are expected to be made at each level
- Hard to manage
What is a communication event?
A communication event is an exchange of information with defined objectives and scope. Can be scheduled(meeting) of unscheduled(event-driven)
What is a communication Mechanism?
A tool or procedure that can be used to deal with a communication event, synchronous or asynchronous
