  • NAACP members or anyone who spoke up for integration were also targets.
  • many school boards said they were making plans but did nothing.

– govners of some states did not accept desegregation such as kansas.

  • the white citerzens council (WCC) was set up in july 1954 in indianola misssisipi and aimed to preserve segregation and used extreme violence
  • KKK memership grew
  • protets outside schools

Long term consqeuqences of brow ruling

  • white hostikity meant civil rights groups members fell ( NAACP fell from 130,000 in 1955 to 80,000 in 1957)
  • the south did sesegregate but desegregation was patchy and slow. By 1960 five deep south states were still fully segregated

The govner of arkansas, orbal faubus, sent 250 state troops to surround the school stopping the black students going in.
