Progress 3 Flashcards
Rehabilitation works have occurred on or near the movement area overnight.
When conducting the runway inspection, prior to opening watch, ATC should be mindful of:
• Tools/equipment left behind.
• FOD on or near the movement area.
• Open trenches or excavated areas within protected zone of the maneuvering area.
• Serviceability of the aeronautical ground lighting system.
• Broken or uneven surface of movement area.
• General cleanliness of movement area, markings and signs.
What was the height of the cloud ceiling according to the following METAR report?

When a TREND is included at the end of an aviation METAR, the trend is a forecast valid for?
Two hours after the time of observation.
When a TREND is included at the end of an aviation METAR, the trend is a forecast valid for?
Two hours after the time of observation.
When flying towards a depression at a constant indicated altitude, the true altitude will be:
Lower than indicated.
What are the units of measurement to describe cloud cover?
0 oktas: Clouds clear
1 - 2 oktas: Few
3 - 4 oktas: Scattered
5 - 7 oktas: Broken
8 oktas: Overcast
Under what conditions may ATC approve visual approach requests by pilots?
Make reference in your response to the reported ceiling at the destination aerodrome
- The flight crew can maintain visual reference to the terrain.
- The reported ceiling is at or above the level of the beginning of the initial approach segment for the aircraft so cleared.
- The pilot reports at the level of the beginning of the initial approach segment or at any time during the instrument approach procedure that the meteorological conditions are such that with reasonable assurance a visual approach and landing can be completed.
- Separation shall be provided between an aircraft cleared to execute a visual approach and other arriving and departing aircraft.
It is now 1640 UTC, and the MET Services provides the following SPECI:
211640Z 12020G35KT 2000 +SHRA FEWO10CB BKNO30 26/25 Q1011 RMK TEMPO SHRA
=
There are aircraft in sequence for departure, as well as, estimates on aircraft arriving at the aerodrome.
What actions, if any, shall be taken by the Aerodrome Controller?
• Suspend VFR operations
• Recall local VFR flights
• Hold VFR departures
• Obtain IFR or SVFR clearance per VFR flight (arrival/departure) request
• Notify approach control/adjacent stations
• Notify local operators, as necessary
• Activate Weather Standby with ARFFS
• Turn on runway and approach lighting for visual reference.
An ATR 72-600 departs at 1610 UTC. At 1613 UTC the flight crew reports they are returning to the airfield due to hydraulic failure.
Detail the actions you will take as the aerodrome controller at the Control Tower?
Emergency Response by ATC in the event of Hydraulic Failure reported by aircraft in flight:
- Acknowledge the emergency and obtain essential information (POB, fuel in pounds, hazardous material)
- Separate the returning aircraft from other traffic
- Hold departures and aircraft for instrument approach
- Ensure runway is sterile (clear of aircraft, vehicles and personnel)
- Follow Full Emergency SOP and complete checklist
- Activate Full Emergency with RFFS aircraft type, ETA, POB and Fuel
- Activate siren and make an announcement on PA system:
“All Staff To Reporting Points! This is not a drill” - Notify relevant parties (Approach Control/adjacent ATS units; ATCO3/SATCO/M-ANS; APM Office; Hospital providing relevant information; Royal Saint Lucia Police Force; Marine Police; Notify Ports Police; Notify the operator)
- Provide any other assistance required by flight crew or rescue personnel.
