Cognitive = Involving a specialised skill based on theoretical knowledge, requiring
extensive training and the passing of a test
Normative = Includes maintaining ethical standards and integrity, and having a
commitment to provide a service for the public good
Organisational = Includes being organised by a national assosciation with disciplinary
powers
What are common characteristics of professions?
Professionals have an orientation towards public service rather than personal profit
Members are often well-paid
Members are loyal to colleagues
Professions are often self regulated
What is the critical model?
Argues that professions have developed more through monopolistic self-interest, with occupational groups trying to shape the market in their own favor.
What is the functionalist model?
Professions need codes of conduct mainly to establish ethical standards for professional behaviour in the public interest and for self-policing of the profession
