what is professionalism?
A set of values, behaviours, and relationships that underpins the trust the public has in doctors
what is the purpose of the GMC?
purpose is to protect, promote and maintain the health and safety of the public by ensuring proper standards in the practice of medicine
what does the GMC do?
- Professional body for doctors in the UK
- Provides good practice guidelines for doctors
- Deals with doctors whose fitness to practise is in doubt
- Stipulates in broad terms medical training syllabus
- Critically for medical students - decides who can and cannot register to practise medicine in the UK
what is taken into account when considering fitness to practice?
severity of the behaviour, the maturity of the student and the year of study, as well as the likelihood of repeat behaviour and how well the student will respond to support
what are the main reasons why medical student were refused provisional registration from the GMC?

what is insight?
the ability to step back from the situation and consider it objectively
•recognition of what went wrong
•acceptance of the student’s responsibilities
•an appreciation of what could and should have been done differently
•an understanding of how to act differently in the future

being honest and trustworthy, and acting with integrity
