What is scope of practice?
Legal allowances in each state, delineated by individual state nurse practice acts
What are standards of advanced practice?
Delineated by the ANA as authoritative statements by which to measure quality of practice, service, or education
What are state practice acts?
Authorize boards of nursing in each state to establish statutory authority for licensure of RNs
What is prescriptive authority?
Ability and extent of NP to prescribe medications to patients. Delineated by state nurse practice acts.
What are credentials?
Encompasses required education, licensure, and certification to practice as nurse practitioner. Acknowledges scope of practice of NPs.
What is licensure?
Established that a person is qualified to perform in a particular professional role. Granted as defined by rules and regulations set form by state board of nursing.
What is certification?
Established that a person has met certain standards in a particular profession which signify mastery of specialized knowledge and skills
What is credentialing and privileging?
Process by which a NP is granted permission to practice in an inpatient setting. Is granted by Hospital Credentialing Committee comprised of physicians who hold privileges at the given hospital where the NP has made the request.
What is competence (decisional capability)?
A state in which a patient is able to make personal decisions about his or her care
What is informed consent?
A state indications that a patient has received adequate instruction or information regarding aspects of care to make a prudent, personal choice regarding such treatment
What is the right to refuse care?
Patients must be advised at the time of their admission to a federally funded institution that they have a right to refuse care as long as the patient has decisional capability (competence)
