****DISCUSS 5 CRITERIA FOR A PROFESSION

A

• UNIQUE SERVICE:

  • no other professional practitioner delivers the same service (only educators teach)
  • service must be unique + clearly defined,
  • interests of the clients (the learner) must always be 1st

• INTELLECTUAL SKILL + SUBJ KNOWLEDGE:

  • NB is emphasised in the theory + practical aspects of occupation (teaching as an occupation).
  • intellectual skill ( of educator ) = extremely NB measure of true professionalism (the teaching profession)

•SPECIALISED TRAINING:

  • a long period of specialised training=required
  • this results=specialised knowledge=professional practitioners (educators) experts in their field

•IN-SERVICE TRAINING:

  • person (educators) also requires in-service training
  • continuously learn (remain a learner)=provide effective service

•CONTINUED RESEARCH:

  • NB so outdated concept / actions can be replaced by modern + valid ones
  • Research should cover a broad spectrum of selection, training + practice

•AUTONOMY:

  • profession must protect its integrity
  • professional controlling body ( such as professional teachs association ) represents all the members of the occupation += official mouthpiece of the profession

•PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY:
- practitioners of a profession must accept personal responsibility for their decisions +actions

•ETHICAL CODE:

  • authority + privileges that community gives ->professional can be misused for a professional persons benefit… establish a professional code
  • An ethical code… systematically sets out the ideal behaviour of a professional person +considered binding.

• SUBORDINATION OF FINANCIAL REWARD TO SERVICE:
- emphasis is on the service (teaching + education) delivered rather than financial reward.

  • … action + behaviour
  • Loot (1990) says it: guide actions of practitioners of an occupation so that they can cope with situation in a professional manner

teachers association:
-association for educators that aims to render service to its member
• create specific area of safety for members
• strive towards professional service
• …promote interests +protect rights of educators

• a teachers’ union :
-established by a group of workers(aim of protecting common interest such: protecting their common interests such as labour provision, remuneration + conditions of service, but also gets involved in broader matters such as state authority + is at the foreground in the political +economic struggle with the state
-believes that it is the state’s responsibility to make provision for all facets of teaching + that it is the right +even the obligations of educators + learners to protest in order to ensure that the state accepts +meets it responsibility
