Occupation
A type of occupation that requires prolonged preparation and formal qualifications higher lever criteria.
Profession
The approach that nursing most closely meets the criteria to be
deemed a profession. Defines profession based on common characteristics:
a. high intellectual level,
b. specialized body of knowledge,
c. EBP,
d. responsibility & accountability,
e. Code of ethics,
f. competency and professional licensure.

EBP
the duty of a person to complete tasks and assignments that are within their power, control, and authority.
Responsibility
an obligation or willingness to be answerable for one’s own actions and or the action of others.
Accountability
Self-directed or independent and the ability to make decisions about
one’s future. Refers to the clients right to make healthcare decisions for themselves.

Empowerment

a. Used by establishing therapeutic relationships with patients and colleagues.
b. Ex: Doctors more willing to give wanted orders due to trust
c. Ex: Patient more willing to work with nurse on care due to trust.
Referent
Based on knowledge, skills, or expertise used or withheld.
a. Think of this power as knowing it all so that makes you an expert.
b. Ex: used to teach, counsel and motivate pt, coworkers, and students.
Expert powers
The ability of one person to grant another some type of reward
a. Ex: If you get up and walk around, I will take your catheter out.
Reward Power
Ability to reprimand, withhold rewards, and threaten punishment.
a. Damages therapeutic relationships
b. Can be considered unethical and or illegal.
c. Ex: giving IM medication when the pt refuses oral medication.
Coercive Power
Legislative or legal act that gives the indv. Or organization the
right to make decisions .
a. BON has legitimate powers due to the NPA.
b. Nurses become legitimate once they become liciensed.
Legitimate Power
Large group of indv. Who have similar beliefs, desires, or needs to become
organized.
a. Bigger in number makes the organization more heard
b. ANA helps make changed\s in the nursing field.
Collective
Aim to improve the standards of health access to
healthcare for everyone.
a. In 1964 wrote a paper stating BSN should be the basic level of preparation
for nurses

a. Has to have a RN in order to get more specialized training.
b. Ex: Wound care, chemo certification, advance life support, lactation.

unjustifiable attempt to touch another person or the threat of doing so

actual harmful or unwarranted contact with another person without his or her consent
Battery
When a competent client is confined or restrained with intent to prevent him or her from leaving.
