Products from crude oil Flashcards
What is crude oil?
A mixture of hydrocarbons
What are molecules with a length of 3 chains used for?
Refinery gas
What are molecules with a length of 8 chains used for? What is it’s boiling point?
Petrol, 40°C
What are molecules with a length of 10 chains used for? What is it’s boiling point?
Naphtha 110°C
What are molecules with a length of 15 chains used for? What is it’s boiling point?
Kerosene 180°C
What are molecules with a length of 20 chains used for? What is it’s boiling point?
Diesel 250°C
What are molecules with a length of 35 chains used for? What is it’s boiling point?
Oil 340°C
What are molecules with a length of 40 chains used for?
Bitumen
How do properties change as a chain gets longer?
1) shorter chains are less viscous
2) shorter are more volatile (change to a gas at a lower temperature)
3) shorter chains are more flammable
What do properties depend on?
The forces: strong covalent bonds within each hydrocarbon, intermolecular forces between different hydrocarbons molecules in the mixture.
Why are crude oils important for modern life?
1) burn cleanly, make good fuels (central heating, power stations)
2) large industry which makes various chemicals and plastics
3)
