Q

Correlation between Variety (P) and quantity (Q)

A

there is an inverse correlation between product variety P, and product quantity Q. If factories P is high, then Q is likely to be low.

Q

what is a Job shop

A

A job shop is a low quantity Production facility with:
-Low quantity range (0-100 units/year)
-Specialized and custom products
-Complex products
-general purpose equiptment
-highly skilled labour
-maximum flexibility

17
Q

Fixed position layout

A

This type of factory is used for craft based industry and very large products like: Ships, aircrafts, heavy machinery, specialist car manufacture.

18
Q

Process layout (Functional layout)

A

used for jobbing manufacture and batch manufacture. Q = 1 to 000’s.
-Most versatile type of manufacture.
-Suits frequently changing product mix
-Typical of factories manufacturing machined metal components
(E.G. all milling in one area)

19
Q

Low production range

A

0-100 Annual Units

20
Q

Medium production range

A

100-10,000 Annual Units

21
Q

High production range

A

10,000 to millions

22
Q

Facility: Hard product variety

A

Batch production
-Set-up time = lost production
-usually arranged in a process layout

23
Q

Facility: Soft product variety

A

Cellular manufacturing
-Changeover time minimal
-Cellular layout based on Group Technology

24
Q

Quantity production

A

single parts on single pieces of equipment
process layout

25
Q

Flow line produciton

A

Parts and assemblies move through multiple workstations. Product layout. Used for very high volume or mass production. Cars

26
Q

A

Batch production and Cellular manufacturing

28
