Production Of Materials Flashcards
Define:
Steam Thermal Cracking
The process by which ethane gas or larger hydrocarbons are mixed with steam and passed through large metal coils, producing ethylene.
Define:
Catalytic Cracking
The process in which high molecular weight fractions from crude oil are broken into lower molecular weight substances in the presence of high temperatures and a catalyst
Which alkene is a major by-product of catalytic cracking?
Ethylene
What property makes alkenes more reactive than their corresponding alkanes?
The double bond.
Define:
Addition reaction
A reaction in which two or more molecules are reacted together to form a single molecule, without loss of atoms.
Product: Ethanol
Reactants?
Conditions?
Uses?
Reactants - ethylene and water
Conditions - high temp (300 C), high pressure (60-70 atm), sulfuric acid catalyst.
Uses - fuel, solvent, cleaning and disinfecting fluid
Why is ethanol a good solvent?
It has a polar end, and a non-polar end. Meaning it can dissolve most of both polar and non-polar molecules.
