Production Of Energy Flashcards
1
Q
5 Advantages of fossil fuels and nuclear power?
A
- Can be built anywhere with a good access to fuel source
- Nuclear produces no SO2 or CO2 so no acid rain or global warming
- Nuclear uses small amount of fuel for large output
- Cheaper
- Uninterrupted supply (reliable)
2
Q
5 disadvantages to nuclear and fossil fuels?
A
- Expensive to build
- Sulfer and Nitrogen from FF contribute to acid rain
- Coal mining, and gas/oil extraction have a large environmental effect
- Nuclear Requires expensive and robust safety systems
- Radioactive waste is costly to store
3
Q
3 advantages to micro-generation?
A
- No CO2 , SO2 from solar or wind
- Can sell back to national grid (feed-in)
- Zero fuel costs
4
Q
3 Disadvantages of micro-generation?
A
- Erratic energy supply
- Can or generate large amounts of energy
- Not reliable
- Visual pollution
5
Q
Why do we need a national grid?
A
Reliable energy source
Matches changing energy supply
Connect to consumers
6
Q
What is micro-generation?
A
Generating electricity locally on a small scale, close to where it is needed. E.g solar or domestic wind turbines
7
Q
Voltage at consumer and at the power station?
A
Homes - 230V
Power S - 25 000V
8
Q
Insulation costs?
A
Double glazing (£2000) Cavity wall insulation (£250)
Loft insulation (£250) Floor insulation (£140) Draught proofing (£50)
9
Q
Payback time?
A
Annual savings
