Product Design Process Flashcards
How many stages are there in the Product Design Process?
There are four (4) stages.
Name the four stages of the Product Design Process.
- Investigating and Defining
- Design and Development (Conceptualisation)
- Planning and Production
- Evaluation
How many steps are in the Product Design Process?
There are ten (10) steps.
What are the four (4) steps found within the Investigating and Defining a need stage?
- Identify client, user, need, problem or opportunity
- Define this in a design brief (context, constraints and considerations)
- Evaluation criteria - weighted for design options, four-part for the finished product and questions to evaluate the product design process.
- Research - annotated to show relevance.
What are the three (3) steps found within the Design and Development stage?
- Visualisations - ideas drawn for parts or whole of the product, small and drawn quickly.
- Design options (3D presentation drawings), coloured, annotated to show how design brief requirements have been met as well as proposed materials and processes; selection and justification of preferred option using weighted criteria and a decision matrix.
- Working Drawing to show product specifications.
What are the two (2) steps found within the Planning and Production stage?
- Scheduled Production Plan - sequence plan, time line, materials list, risk assessment and quality measures.
- Production - employing risk management and documenting progress with log and photos.
What is the one (1+) step found within the Evaluation stage?
- Product Evaluation - using evaluation criteria, user feedback and suggesting improvements.
+. Presentation of product indicating how it satisfies the design brief.
+. Care label and imagies for the product.
What are the critical components of the Design Brief?
Outline of the context, constraints and considerations.
A design brief is a written explanation - given to a designer - outlining the aims, objectives and milestones of a design project.
A thorough and articulate design brief is a critical part of the design process. It helps develop trust and understanding between the client and designer - and serves as an essential point of reference for both parties.
Above all, the design brief ensures that important design issues are considered and questioned before the designer starts work.
What is the purpose of developing product evaluation criteria?
Development of criteria helps us to to evaluate how well the design, planning and the final product satisfies the design brief.
What is the research step used for?
Research into factors related to the design brief: materials and process investigations.
What are Visualisations?
Concept sketches and drawings of whole or part of potential ideas to meet the requirements of the brief.
What are Design Options?
A series of potential solutions evaluated to determine which best suits the requirements of the brief.
What are Working Drawings?
Drawings including technical drawings, showing product specifications (i.e. sizes and construction methods) needed. for production planning.
What are the five (5) key aspects of the Production Plan?
- Sequential Plan
- Timeline
- Tools, Equipment and Machines List
- Materials List
- Risk Assessment
What documentation should be produced during the Production step?
Product and production record. Refinements and modifications may be made throughout production.
