- how the product appeals to the customer in terms of how it looks
- based on subjective judgement of customer
- a popular way to differentiate a product
Difference between customer and consumer
Customer- person who buys the product
Consumer- person who uses the product
Difference between product and service
Product- tangible
Service- intangible (haircut, mobile phone service)

To address sustainability, product design needs to consider a variety of environmental issues:
- use of raw materials, water or other resources (inputs)
- energy use and its impact on climate change
- waste and pollution produced by business
- the impact the business has on employees and the local, wider and international community
Advantages for business becoming more sustainable and ethical
- better brand reputation
- not wasting resources
- not damaging employees lives
- save the environment
- long term solution
- widens target market
- charge premium prices
