Producing New Cells Flashcards
1
Q
What is mitosis?
A
The division of the nucleus into two daughter nuclei which are identical to each other and to the original parent nucleus
2
Q
What does mitosis provide ?
A
Mitosis provides new cells for growth and repair of damaged cells
3
Q
What are the stages of mitosis?
A
- A copy is made of the chromosomes
- chromosomes shorten and thicken into two identical chromatids
- chromosomes line up at the equator and the centromeres attach to spindle fibres
- chromosomes move to opposite poles, spindle fibres contract and chromatids are separated
- nuclei reform and cytoplasm divides into two daughter cells with identical full sets of chromosomes
4
Q
What is a chromatid?
A
One half of a chromosome which has become shorter and thicker during replication
5
Q
What are spindle fibres?
A
They are formed during mitosis and attach to chromatids to pull them apart
6
Q
What is the equator?
A
Centre of the cell where chromosomes line up
