Breast engorgement non pharmacological therapies:
-cabbage leaves inside bra
-warm shower or warm compress
-empty breast completely at feedings
-cool compress after feedings apply 15 minutes on and 45 minutes off
-breast creams
-breast shells in the bra to soften the nipples if they’re irritated or cracked
Diaphragm contraceptive:
-inserted 6 hours prior to intercourse and removed 6 hours after but no more than 24 hours
-wash with mild soap and water after use
-replace every 2 years
-needs to be refitted if weight gain of 20%
Neonatal abstinence syndrome:
Jitteriness, lethargy, irritability, poor feeding

Vitamin K (phytonadione):
Given IM vastus lateralis
Erythromycin ointment:
Given as ppx to prevent ophthalmia neonatorum
Circumcision:
-need informed consent
-the newborn will not be able to be bottle fed for 2 to 3 hours prior to prevent vomiting and aspiration
-the newborn is restrained during the procedure
-keep area clean, change diaper every 4 hours, clean penis with warm water with each diaper change
-with clamp procedures, apply petroleum jelly with each diaper change for at least 24 hours to keep diaper from adhering to penis
-no bath tubs until healed
-notify doctor s/s of infection
-avoid pre moistened towels as they contain alcohol
Leopold’s maneuver:
Abdominal palpation of the fetal presenting part, lie, attitude, descent, and probable location where FHR can be auscultated on the client’s abdomen
Non pharm pain methods:
Hypnosis ok
IVF:
Procedure collecting the patient’s eggs from the ovaries, fertilizing the eggs in the lab with sperm, and transferring the embryo to the uterus
Identification of the newborn:
Match baby’s ID with mom’s ID only
