Processes of Memory Flashcards
What is meant by encoding?
Translating/changing information into a form that can be understood by the brain
What is meant by storage?
When information is kept in your brain for a period of time
What is meant by retrivial?
When information is located in the brain and brought back
Name 3 types of encoding
Visual, Acoustic, Semantic
What is visual encoding?
When information tends to be coded in terms of how it looks
What is acoustic encoding?
When information tends to be coded in terms of sound
What is semantic encoding?
When information tends to be encoded in terms of meaning
What research is there to support encoding?
Baddeley’s research
What is the aim of Baddeley’s research?
To investigate if there was any difference between the type of encoding for STM and LTM
What is Baddeley’s conclusion?
We encode acoustically in our STM and semantically in our LTM
What are the different types of LTM?
Episodic, Semantic, Procedural
What is episodic memory?
Based on our experiences in life that contains information on what has happened and also where and when it happened.
What is semantic memory?
Semantic memory is the memory of acquired knowledge—memorized facts or information
What is procedural memory?
AKA muscle memory. Refers to remembering how to do things without having to recall the memory
Name one strength of different types of LTM
