Processes of Human Resource Management Flashcards
What are the three stages of acquisition?
Identifying Staffing Needs
Recruitment
Selection
What is involved in identifying staffing needs?
The specific job vacancy news to be identified and analysed
This will result in a job description - a written statement describing the duties, tasks and responsibilities associated with the particular job
Followed by a job specification - a written statement describing the key skills, experience and qualifications needed for a particular job
The value of the job must be established and a remuneration figure attached
What is involved in the recruitment stage?
Involves accumulating a pool of potential candidates for a job, from which the business will make its final selection
Some positions can be filled internally by promoting or retaining employees
If a business needs to source external applicants, it can:
outsource recruitment to private employment agencies
recruit school students or graduates
utilise online advertising and Centrelink
How does McDonald’s undertake recruitment?
McDonald’s Australia uses a centralised approach to staff acquisition, with potential applicants all submitting details through one central website

What is involved in the selection stage, and how does McDonald’s undertake it?
A screening process where the information gathered about job applicants is reviewed and the most appropriate candidate is chosen
As well as judging skill, selection processes increasingly evaluate character
During this phase, there may be negotiation over pay & entitlements
The McDonald’s interview process includes a 15 minute face to face interview and a 15 minute activity interacting with customers
What are the key features of the development stage?
Preparing employees for future responsibilities within the organisation due to changes in business strategies or a growth in market share
Having flexible employees is good for efficiency and gaining a competitive advantage
Training includes any activities that are aimed at improving an employee’s present and future performance in the workplace
Results in upgrading skills, knowledge and competency levels in order to better meet the needs of the business
The need for training can be identified by performance appraisals - a formal assessment of how well an employee is working
How does McDonald’s invest in training & development of its employees?
“If we are going to go anywhere, we’ve got to have talent. And I’m going to put my money in talent” - Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald’s
McDonald’s Australia spends $AU40 million annually on training and development
Prior to the first shift at McDonald’s, a new employee must complete an induction program both in-store and online via the Metime portal
McDonald’s Hamburger University has eight campuses around the world and has trained more than 350,000 employees and franchisees

Enables a business to search for specific information when it is needed
Must be kept up to date and secure

Retirement - when an employee decided to give up full-time or part-time work
Resignation - some employees leave their jobs for reasons such as the need for change in their lives, dissatisfaction in their job or family commitments
Voluntary Redundancy - employees can nominate themselves when an existing job is no longer required - the redundancy package may be financially beneficial
What are the two forms of involuntary separation?
Involuntary Redundancy - the termination of employment due to the closing of a firm or the job no longer being required, requires redundancy payments
Dismissal - occurs when an employer terminates an employee’s contract due unacceptable conduct or behaviour
