Processes + Associated Lanforms (from plat boundaries) Flashcards
1
Q
What are the diff. processes + landforms associated w plate boundaries?
A
- sea floor spreading
- subduction
- fold mountain building
- ocean ridges
- ocean trenches
- volcanic island arcs
2
Q
What landforms + processes occur at divergent (constructive) plate boundaries?
A
- C-C: earthquakes, volcanoes, rift valleys
- O-O: ocean ridges, earthquakes, volcanoes
3
Q
What landforms + processes occur at conservative (transform) plate boundaries?
A
- earthquakes
4
Q
What landforms + processes occur at convergent (destructive + collision) plate boundaries?
A
Destructive:
- O-O: ocean trenches, island arcs, earthquakes, volcanoes
- C-O: fold Mts., earthquakes, volcanoes
Collision:
- C-C: fold Mts., earthquakes
5
Q
What is sea floor spreading?
A
- new land forming on ocean floor by lava filling gaps at a constructive boundary
6
Q
What is subduction?
A
- process where a denser, O plate is plunged beneath a less dense C plate
7
Q
How are fold mountains formed?
A
- denser O plate subducts below C plate
- sediment is pushed upwards causing C plays to fold + buckle into fold mountains
8
Q
What are ocean ridges?
A
- lines of mainly mountains formed where 2 O plates are separating
9
Q
How are ocean trenches formed?
A
- denser O plate subducts below C, leaving a deep ocean trench
10
Q
How are volcanic island arcs formed?
A
- heavier plate subducts
- build up pressure causes magma to rise from melting plate
- lava cools creating island arcs
