Processes And Manufacture Flashcards
What are the three main saws
Panel saw - wood
Tenon saw - wood
Hacksaw - for metals and plastics
Coping saw - for cutting curves in wood or plastic
What are the 4 main machine tools/saws
Circular saw
Saw bench
Jig saw
Band saw
What are drills
Tolls which make holes
What are the 4 main type of drills
Bradawls - make a pilot hole to help drill in right place
Brace
Hand drill
Pillar drill (power drill)
What are the 4 main types of drill bits
Twist bits - small holes. HSS (highspeedsteel) used on M & P
Flat Bits - used on wood for large flat bottomed holes
Countersink bits - widen the opening to an existing hole, allowing screw heads to sit flat on the surface
What hand tools are used for shaping materials
Wood chisels - hit them with a mallet
Cold chisels - used on metals - hit with a hammer
Gougers - chisels with a curved cutting edge for sculpting
Bench planes - angled blades to shave off thin layers of material, used to shape wood
Files - hundreds of small teeth to cut away any material. Rough cuts for removing material, fine cuts for final smoothing
What is press moulding
Shapes thermosetting plastics
What is vacuum forming
Air is sucked out from under the plastic
What is blow moulding
Blows air in plastic tubes to expand into the shape of a mould
Whats die casting
Uses a mould for metals and thermoplastics. Melted material poured into the mould
Whats injection moulding
Uses pressure to mould plastics
Whats extrusion
Like injection moulding but Produced long continuous strips
Whats one off production
Makes a product one at a time
Whats batch production
Makes a certain number of products
Mass production
Making loads of the same product
Continuous production
Non stop. Because its too expensive to keep stopping and restarting.
Whats just in time production
Efficient but needs good planning.
Manufaxture gets marerials and components delivered just in time.
Saving space for storage
Less money tied up in unused material
Unsold finished products don’t pile up
What is commercial manufacturing
A system - products are made as a result of a number of different steps
What are the three main parts of a system
Input
Process
Output
What do systems improve
The manufacturing process. More efficient and make sure final product is top class. Feedback loops
Flow charts
What can ICT be used for in manufacture
Data transfer
Software sharing
Stock control
Video conferencing
What is CAD
Designing using a computer
What is CAM
Using computer to manufacture
What can be used for consistency of production
Templates
Jigs
Moulds
