Processes Flashcards
At what two plate boundaries do volcanoes occur at?
Destructive and constructive
Where do earthquakes take place?
At any plate boundary and anywhere
What causes plates to move?
Convection currents
What happens at constructive plate boundaries?
Plates move apart and magma rises up
Which is heavier, oceanic or continental crust?
Oceanic
What happens at a destructive plate boundary?
Plates move towards each other and the oceanic crust is subducted
What happens at a conservative plate boundary?
Plates slide past each other and get stuck. When pressure is realised an earthquake occurs
Where do most tropical storms occur?
Between the Tropic of Capricorn and Cancer
Which places do Tropical storms occur in?
Japan, Philippines, Caribbean
What temperature do oceans have to be for tropical storms to form?
27 degrees
What happens to warm moist air over the oceans?
Rises, cools and condenses forming clouds
What is released as air in condensed which powers the storm?
Latent heat
What are the weather conditions associated with tropical storms?
Strong winds, heavy rainfall and storm surge
What are the weather conditions associated with the eye?
Calm conditions - no cloud or rain
What happens when the tropical storm reaches the land?
Loss of warm moist air and friction with the land slows it down
