Processes Flashcards
What are the two types of processes
Marine processes
Sub-aerial processes
What are the different marine processes
Marine erosion - hydraulic action, wave quarrying, abrasion/corrasion, solution/corrosion
Marine transportation - traction, saltation, suspension, solution
Marine deposition
What are the different sub-aerial processes
Sub-aerial weathering - physical, chemical, biological
Sub-aerial mass movement - landslides, rockfalls, mudflows, slumping, run-off
What is the definition of marine processes
Processes that occur due to the influence of the sea
What is the definition of sub-aerial processes
Land based processes that occur above the water line
What is hydraulic action
Sheer force of the sea water crashing against the coastline causing material to be dislodged and then carried away by the sea
What is wave quarrying
When high energy waves that hit the cliff face have the power to enlarge joints and remove large chunks of rock in one go through vibration
What is abrasion
When pebbles grind along a rock platform, much like sand paper
What is corrasion
High energy waves have the energy to be able to carry pebbles with force
What is attrition
When rocks that the sea is carrying knock against each other
What is solution
Weak carbonic acid in seawater dissolves rock at the coastline and breaks it down
What is corrosion
Rock is eroded as water gets into cracks and holes and dissolves the rock through chemical changes
What is erosion
Breaking down of rocks due to the influence of the sea
What is transportation
The movement of sediment, water and other materials through the ocean and coastal areas
What is traction
Large heavy pebbles are rolled along the river bed
What is saltation
Small rocks or large that bounce along the river bed
What is suspension
Fine sediment is carried within the flow of water
What is solution
Weak carbonic acid in saltwater dissolves rock at the coastline and breaks it down
What is weathering
Breaking down of rock
Biological - plant movement
Chemical - chemical reactions -> rain water
Physical/mechanical - wind, rain, air temp
What is mass movement
The downhill movement of sediment due to gravity
What are landslides
Collapse of rock on a cliff face
What are mudflows
Mix of water and sediment that surges down a slop with tremendous force
What is slumping
Saturated soil slumps down a curved surface
