Process qualifications,section and appointment of lay magistral
3 things needed to be apart of magistrates
- must be ages between 18-74
- live or work near there local court in which they serve
- work/serve at least 26 half days or 13 full days
People excluded from being becoming a magistrate
- criminal convictions
- having an incompatible job such as a police officer or traffic warden
The person must have 6 qualities what are they?
- self awareness and be open to learning
- communicate with sensitivity and respect
- understand and appreciate different perspectives
- have good character
- work and engage with people professionally
How to be selected
- applicants must submit an application either through post or online (often a response from an advert or local newspaper)
- candidates will then be short listed and have reference checked by local advisory committee
- called for an interview with 2 magistrates aswell as upstanding character in the local community

Trial and sentencing excersise too see how competent they are at the role
When deciding whom to recommend what must the LAC ensure
- a balanced bench
Balanced bench?
Mags are diverse based on:
age,race,occupation,gender,ethnicity
Once the lac recommend the candidates who do they go to
Chief justice
What will chief justice do?
