process of meiosis Flashcards
1
each chromosome makes copies of themselves. they are joined to their copy at a centromere. the original and copy chromosome are called chromatids
2
homologous pairs of chromosomes move and line up with one another. this is called synapsis
3
maternal and paternal chromatids exchange sections of their DNA (crossing over), which alters the combinaton of genes on the chromosome. the process ensures variation in offspring. membrane surrounding nucleus has disappeared
4
homologous chromosomes move to opposite ends of pole.
5
nucleus membrane forms and divides cell into two daughter cells. each cell contains one chromosome from each pair. process called meiosis 1
6
each chromosome in new cells consists of two sister chromatids joined at a centromere. chromatids line to the centre of the cell and the membrane around the nucleus disappears
7
sister chromatids are pulled towards opposite poles. nuclear membrane forms and cell divides.
