What is a business system?
A set of business components working together to achieve a defined objective
Components may include People, Processes, IT Systems and equipment
Each component may be a system in its own right
What is an IT System
Provides the IT Services needed to support the business processes in meeting the business goals
What is a process?
A linked set of tasks performed by a business in response to a business event. The business process receives, manipulates and transfers information or physical items, in order to produce an output of value to a customer.
Why model business processes - Advantages
Enforce a consistent/standard way of doing a process Look for problems Look for efficiency gains Train staff now and in the future Save money Improve customer service Cope with mergers and acquisitions Document an undocumented process
Why model processes
Part of business architecture (not a project-based activity)
Provides documentation so we know what we should be doing
Makes future change more agile and secure and is often necessary for certification (ISO etc.)
Process modelling is part of problem-solving: Aids communication and understanding between stakeholders and helps identify and solve problems stakeholders and helps (project-based activity)
