Order Type is
Order type is a category list ﴾ORD 30﴿ that the system uses to determine how it
should treat different orders. Order type is used heavily by Order Transmittal to
determine where to send different types of orders. It’s also used to determine on
which tabs the orders show up in Chart Review. Finally, there are “Install Mnemonics”
in EMR System Definitions which establish different rules for different order types.
Generally speaking, order types will be broader than procedure categories
Procedure Category is
Procedure category is a master file and is used to set up how orders appear and
behave when they are ordered. It also includes some background information about
the order, like the order type that should be used for these procedures
Record Purposes
There are 4 record purposes.
Orderable: “Someone please do this.”
Performable: “This can be done.”
Chargeable: “Let’s get paid for it.”
Historical: “Document historical procedures.”
