Ear drop medication temperature
Room temp - warm by running warm water over the bottle
Ear drop placement
- Position patient on side with affected side UP
- Pull pinna up and back (down and back if child is under 3)
- Hold application 1 cm above the ear canal
How long should the patient stay on the side after an ear drop?
Face up 5-10 minutes - apply pressure to the tragus with fingers
Enteral feeding tube position
- HOB 30-45
- Sitting up
- High fowlers
How can you help prevent cramps at enteral temperature
Room temperature!
What should you do before opening an enteral feeding can?
Clean the can with alcohol swab
How do you verify enteral feeding tube placement?
Audible swooshing over the stomach when air is injected into the port
What do you need to check with each feeding?
- placement
- residual
How do you check for residual?
- Before each feeding for intermittent
- q4-6 hrs for continous feedings
- draw up 10-30 mL of air, put in tube, draw up residual
When should you hold the feed (based on residual)
- > 500 mL
- > 250 for two check 1 hr apart
How often do you change the bag of feeding?
q 24 hrs
Max hang time of formula in an open system
12 hrs
Max hang time of formula in a closed system
24-48 hrs
During a continuous feed how do you flush?
30 mL of water q 4 hrs
What do you always do after each formula administration
Flush to ensure patency!
